Movie buffs, grab some popcorn, and settle in for a cinematic 2022! The movie scene last year was a bit of a snooze fest thanks to all the scheduling delays caused by COVID-19. This year however is looking pretty packed with some awesome action thriller movies to look forward to; from superhero flicks to adventurous romcoms and spine-chilling horror, here are 7 of those movies that should be on your watchlist!
The Batman
2008 was undoubtedly Robert Pattinson’s year! With his “pale white and ice cold skin” and classic messy yet immaculate hair, the vampire stole an entire generation’s heart. Well, Pattinson’s at it again. Only this time he is not shining in the sun, instead, he is seen lurking around in the dead of night. This year, Robert Pattinson is Vengeance. The Twilight actor has taken up the mantle of The Batman in Matt Reeves’ adaptation of the Caped Crusader. Released on March 4, 2022, The Batman pitted Bruce Wayne’s masked vigilante against a bevy of villains including the famous Riddler and the Penguin. The newest Batz also joined his complicated flame/foe, Catwoman AKA Selina Kyle, which is played by Zoe Kravitz, and is being called among Pattinson’s best action thriller movies.
The Lost City
Fresh off of the drama genre, the comedy queen is back in the newest action-adventure flick, The Lost City. Sandra Bullock bid adieu to her serious roles after 2021’s Unforgivable and is now partnered with the charming Channing Tatum in an Indiana Jones like quest through the jungle. Bullock is playing the role of the reclusive romance novelist while Tatum is going to be the cover model for her books and the two are forced to go on a promotional tour together by the publisher.
The film has so far brought in $105,344,029 in revenue. We don’t know about you but this has 90s romcom written all over it. But hey, we wouldn’t mind some cliche with Bullocks’ witty punchlines.
Morbius
2022 has been quite the year for Marvel fans! Joining the extensive Marvel cinematic universe on 1st April was the troubled antihero, Morbius. The unconventional Marvel film follows the scientist Michael Morbius as he struggles with a rare type of blood disorder. His experiments to find a cure go south and end up giving him a form of vampirism. The Oscar winning, Suicide Squad Joker, Jared Leto is witnessed as bringing Marvel’s vampire to life.
The massive and honestly surprising success of Sony’s Venom opened a world of possibilities in the superhero landscape. You’d see how the studio that brought us the self-righteous Captain America, handles their first antihero film. Considering Leto’s impressive levels of commitment, Morbius is surely an interesting watch
Ambulance
Despite the name, Michael Bay’s movie is not a medical drama. Turns out, Ambulance is a heist movie, which is a new area for the director who’s known for hardcore action flicks like Armageddon, Bad Boys, and the Transformer series. The director himself loves a good heist movie though, so he decided to make one.
Starring Jake Gyllenhal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Ambulance gets messed up and tense as it keeps going. Yahya plays the role of Will Sharp who recruits his adoptive brother and also bank robber Danny, played by Gyllenhal. And while you can bet Gyllenhal brings his A-game, it is Candyman’s Abdul-Mateen who has the director completely bowled.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Christmas is coming early this year for Marvel fans! Only five months after his appearance in Spider-man: No Way Home, Dr. Steven Strange is returned in the highly anticipated Multiverse of Madness.
Judging by the looks of the trailer, the newest MCU film is handpicking quite a few plots from the animated series What If? Which is where we first explored the dynamics of the multiverse. From what we know so far, Multiverse of Madness follows Strange as he deals with the consequences of the time altering spell that messes with the natural magical order of things.
Top Gun: Maverick
We have kept THE VERY BEST for the last. Now here’s a movie that inspired an entire generation to switch careers and sign up for being a Navy Pilot. For three decades we’ve felt the need, the need for speed. And finally, after 35 years, Tom Cruise has returned with another one of his action thriller movies on screen as Pete ‘Maverick’ Michelle in the Top Gun sequel.
While sequels, in general, are famous for being letdowns, good ol’ Maverick has changed the narrative. The trailers have been promising, as they lean into the iconic music and stunning visuals; giving us a glimpse of Cruise pulling eight Gs as he darts through the skies for real. Maverick has surpassed the $1 billion (£810 million) milestone at the global box office, making it both Tom Cruise’s and the year’s most profitable movie.
Thor: Love and Thunder
If you thought Thor’s thundering days were over after Endgame you were mistaken. The Asgardian has returned to the big screen on July 8th, in his fourth standalone film!
We never really got full closure on Thor’s love story with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster; well according to director Taika Waititi, this is a “full-blown love story”. In addition to playing the incredibly smart scientist and Thor’s love interest, it’s quite evident that Jane is playing a much more important part in the MCU after Love and Thunder.
