1. Avatar 2- a long time coming
Steve As well, President of 20th Century Studios, recently teased fans in one of his recent interviews while talking about the highly anticipated sequel. According to him, we’re just “not ready for what Jim is doing”. After years of wait, we gotta say we’re not sure even Cameron himself was ready for Avatar 2 when he initially announced it.
Apparently, the whole creative process for the film was a real challenge. After introducing us to the breathtaking island of Pandora, the director and his team had their work cut out for them if they were going to give us something new in the sequel. Cameron himself shared how “nuts” the entire process was. “I mean if Avatar hadn’t made so much damn money, we’d never do this – because it’s crazy”.
Some may question if anybody even wants an Avatar sequel now, after all this time. But we can’t bet against the filmmaker. We know if anyone can pull it off, it’s Cameron. The man is responsible for two of the top three highest-grossing films of all time! Could Avatar 2 dethrone one of those movies? Apart from that, the year 2022 has given us some of the scintillating, thrilling, and highest grossing movies. Can Avatar-2 beat those and take the throne? That’s entirely possible once you get to know a little about what to expect from the upcoming potential blockbuster.
2. What to expect from the sequel of a massive hit
What can you expect from a film that has been in the works for over 10 years? In one word, a lot. Thankfully Cameron hasn’t been tight-lipped about his latest project and has given us tons of behind the scene info. One could argue it’s a gimmick to hype up the project but we’re not complaining.
If you thought that the Island of Pandora from the first Avatar was fascinating, you’ve seen nothing yet. The record breaking filmmaker has decided to take it up a notch in the sequel. According to Stephen Lang, who played the role of Colonel Miles Quaritch in part one, fans are going to be “enchanted and fascinated” by the Na’vi’s return.
3. A world beyond the island of Pandora
Instead of the mystical island from Avatar, this time around we’ll be exploring an ambitious aquatic marvel. The upcoming sequel is set primarily underwater! Considering Cameron’s first blockbuster was the Titanic, we bet it was an interesting deja vu kinda moment for the director.
While we can imagine just how challenging it must’ve been for the crew to work in these “new waters”, the cast didn’t have it easy either. According to reports, actors, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the gang had to go through laborious training, which could even impress a Navy Seal. Not only did the actors have to work on their acting, but they also had to practice holding their breath underwater for longer lengths of time while filming. Doesn’t sound like the ideal acting environment if you ask us.
The upcoming sequel has used some of the most mind-blowing underwater CGI technologies, something that hasn’t been done before, at least to this extent. The unique nature of tech meant a longer pre-production spell.
4. What’ll be the story of Avatar 2?
Apart from the insanely amazing theatrics, the film follows a universal, more human theme of family. “I always say that Jim’s movies have universal themes — and really, there’s no more universal theme than family”, said the producer of the sequel, Jon Landau. While the first part focused on their budding romance, the sequel will introduce us to their preteen kids. Will we get some Na’vi style teen drama? We sure hope so.
But exactly how does the underwater part fit in the story? Well from what we know so far, Jake and Neytiri along with their family are forced out of their home, and in their quest to find a new home in Pandora, they end up spending quite some time “on the water, around the water, and in the water”. You’ll see the couple with their three children, Neteyam, Lo’ak, and Tuktirey.
Conclusion
According to Asbell, Avatar 2 is “going to blow people away”. Honestly after a decade’s wait, fans expect nothing less from Cameron. That’s a wrap on everything you need to know about the next potential blockbuster. If you’re a fan of Cameron’s work then you’re in for a treat. According to the filmmaker himself, there’s a third, fourth, and even a fifth part to the saga. And luckily you won’t have to wait years for the new installments, as you did with the sequel.
